Speaker Bio:
My 20 plus year career in graphic design began in 1983. During that time approximately 50% of that time I was a self employed freelance designer/production artist. I knew full well what it was like to pull together my own benefits. I had to shop for my own insurance and learned how it applied to my needs, sometimes the hard way. In 2001, after over 8 years with a great company with full benefits, I experienced a layoff as the company downsized and then closed a short while later. In 2002 I obtained my insurance license and my new career began. At this point, I have 15 years experience helping others find health plans that meet their needs. As an independent agent, I am self employed and still shop for my own health plan. Being an independent agent allows me to offer plans from various carriers and offer an objective overview of what is available. My approach is to educate and consult. The idea is to help clients choose what will best meet their needs and fit their budget.

    Hear from greater Cleveland’s research and advocacy organization for the arts, Community Partnership for Arts and Culture. Valerie Schumacher will share data from the 2014 report “Forming Cleveland: A Craft, Design and Visual Arts Industry Study.” She will cover economic impact, salary data and employment trends around "commercial graphic design" occupations including printing, graphic design, web design, architecture and others. Ms. Schumacher will then provide an overview of their resource for artists, Creative Compass. The website hosts a comprehensive list of service organizations for artists, spaces, job openings, calls for artists and the Artist as an Entrepreneur Institute online. Lastly, as the organization moves into a new era of creating the conditions for artist and culture to thrive, Ms. Schumacher will provide an overview of the organization’s new strategic imperatives.

    Speaker Bio: As Director of Artist Services, Valerie employs strategy and creativity in delivering services to the arts and culture sector in greater Cleveland focusing on individual artists.

    Valerie serves in a range of roles at CPAC including program operations and managing the nonprofit's online presence. When she started at CPAC in 2008, Valerie implemented CPAC’s award-winning Artists as an Entrepreneur Institute (AEI) and began maintaining and improving upon the email newsletters you see today. Valerie's passion for connecting arts and culture professionals with resources fueled her work as she managed planning, content creation and implementation of Creative Compass, a clearinghouse of information for artists in greater Cleveland and the Northeast Ohio region. Valerie supported the implementation of the Creative Workforce Fellowship during its full run from its early beginnings in 2008, having directed the program from late 2014 until it ended in early 2017.

    In addition to the above projects, Valerie serves as CPAC’s in-house designer/design collaborator. Her work is seen in CPAC’s brand and style guidelines, our annual reports and research such as When Artists Break Ground and Creative Minds in Medicine. She serves on The Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts Committee of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association and previously served on the COSE Arts Network’s Advisory Council.

    Join us on for a special weekday morning Field Trip to tour the NASA Glenn Graphics and Visualization Lab (GVIS). The Graphics and Visualization Lab features Virtual Reality, Natural User Interface, Scientific Visualization, Interactive System Simulation, and Augmented Reality.

    Join us for this special meeting lead by Herb Schilling, Computer Scientist and good friend of CDPUG member Diane Sadowski.

    About GVIS

    The Graphics & Visualization (GVIS) Lab provides specialized services, expertise, and facilities for the visualization of scientific data, engineering analyses, and mission scenarios.

    As researchers conduct more and more experiments by computer simulation instead of in traditional laboratories or wind tunnels, scientific visualization of the numerical results has become a powerful and necessary research tool. Similarly, engineers and mission planning specialists use visualizations to study the details of an orbital rendezvous, the assembly of new spacecraft, or the testing of a rocket engine in one of NASA Glenn’s facilities.

    The GVIS Lab staff works with scientists and engineers to produce custom graphics applications, animations, or multi-media presentations of their projects. Projects can also take advantage of the Lab’s many advanced display devices, such as stereoscopic 3D projectors and monitors, or be adapted for the GRUVE Lab, NASA Glenn’s fully immersive, large-screen Virtual Reality facility.

    Many of the projects utilize the Advanced Computational Concepts Lab (ACCL), Glenn’s high-performance computing facility, which is tightly integrated with the visualization equipment in the GVIS Lab.

    Finally, because the images created by the GVIS Lab are often beautiful, exciting, and inspiring representations of NASA’s research, the lab provides a variety of ways to support outreach, education, public awareness, and program advocacy.
